In episode 5.04, “Birthmarks”, John House dies, and House reveals that he does not believe John was his organic father. House removes pores and skin from John’s ear for DNA testing, which confirms his suspicion and seems partly to validate his disdain for his father. Despite the revelation, John’s dying seems to have moved House; later within the episode in a uncommon moment of vulnerability, House says to Wilson, “My dad’s useless,” as if the significance of the event have been just sinking in.

Singer had loved Lisa Edelstein’s portrayal of a prostitute on The West Wing, and sent her a duplicate of the pilot script. Edelstein was attracted to the quality of the writing and her character’s “snappy dialogue” with House, and was cast as Dr. Lisa Cuddy. Individual episodes of the series contain additional references to the Sherlock Holmes tales. The major affected person in the pilot episode is called Rebecca Adler after Irene Adler, a personality within the first Holmes brief story, “A Scandal in Bohemia”. In the season two finale, House is shot by a crazed gunman credited as “Moriarty”, the name of Holmes’s nemesis.

She appears in 9 episodes during the run of season 2, taking a job at PPTH (after asking Cuddy to make sure it was okay with House) to be close to her husband throughout his restoration.
