The Aztecs had schools for the noble youths known as Calmecac where they’d receive rigorous religious and military coaching. The Aztecs also had a well-developed theory about education, which has an equivalent word in Nahuatl known as tlacahuapahualiztli. It means “the art of elevating or educating an individual”, or “the artwork of strengthening or bringing up males”. This was a broad conceptualization of education, which prescribed that it begins at residence, supported by formal education, and bolstered by group living.
