
The Defender Dakar Design Preview marks Land Rover’s latest effort to merge rally heritage with real-world usability. The near-production concept, revealed recently, previews a street-legal version of the brand’s Defender D7X-R Dakar rally car, which was designed for rally competition. Unlike previous rally-inspired models, this iteration retains core performance traits while adapting them for daily driving.
Land Rover’s engineers faced a key challenge: simplifying the D7X-R’s race-proven setup without diluting its rally character. The rally car’s stock Defender Octa chassis, engine, and transmission served as the foundation, but upgrades—such as reinforced gears and custom suspension—were necessary for competition. The production model will streamline these elements while keeping the rally-inspired feel intact.
Suspension adjustments are the most noticeable change. The rally version relied on air springs and hydraulic dampers, but the street model switches to coil springs and Bilstein dampers for improved reliability. The rally car’s stiff rear suspension, designed to carry a 145-gallon fuel tank, spare tires, and tools, will be replaced with softer springs in the production version. Despite these modifications, wheel travel remains close to the rally car’s, ensuring off-road capability stays strong.

Wheel size increases from 17-inch to 21-inch, though the tires stay at 35-inch off-road rubber with lower sidewalls. This preserves the rally car’s ground clearance advantage, which already exceeded the Octa’s tallest setting by nearly 2 inches. The D7X-R has similar wheel travel to a stock Octa (which uses 20- to 22-inch wheels and 33-inch tires) due to the larger-diameter tires, but an extra 1.9 inches of ground clearance for a total of 14.6 inches, which will likely carry over to the production Defender Dakar. The Octa has 12.7 inches of ground clearance in its tallest setting.
The drivetrain receives a significant upgrade. The rally car’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 was limited to 400 hp by class rules, but the street version will harness the full 626 hp output of the Octa’s engine. Torque drops slightly from 590 lb-ft to 553 lb-ft, though Land Rover has not confirmed whether the rally car’s mechanical limited-slip differential will be retained or replaced with the Octa’s electronic version. Transmission and differential gear refinements may also occur, but specifics remain undisclosed.
This approach aligns with a growing trend in the automotive industry. Many manufacturers now blend rally-inspired traits with practical road use, but few achieve the balance Land Rover aims for. The Defender Dakar is more than a homologation special, it’s a vehicle built to conquer extreme terrain while remaining functional on public roads.

Land Rover has not yet disclosed pricing, availability, or production volume. The design preview confirms the model’s arrival next year, but whether it will be a limited edition or part of a broader lineup remains uncertain. For now, the focus is on proving the concept’s viability, both on and off the road.
