Mercedes-Benz has updated its Marco Polo campervan with added headroom and a new sliding roof that opens to the night sky. The changes support the company’s goal of making the van a practical choice for both travel and daily use.
More space, better views
The most visible change is the redesigned pop-up roof, now built from a double-skinned aluminum shell. It provides 14.6 inches of headroom in the rear—3.9 inches more than before. The roof also includes optional LED lighting and a sliding panorama window, which Mercedes designed to offer a clear view of the stars.
The van features a revised awning that can be removed between trips, reducing its profile when not in use. Inside, magnetic curtains replace traditional hooks or tracks, allowing for faster setup and takedown. A new sound system, tailored for the Marco Polo, includes eight speakers and a subwoofer, with Bluetooth that remains active even when the infotainment system is off.
The kitchenette remains standard, equipped with two gas burners, a sink, and a 1.4-cubic-foot cool box. Mercedes states this unit is 25% more energy-efficient than earlier versions. Other updates include smoother drawer slides, redesigned folding tables, and a simplified bench seat control panel. The van still comes with 12.3-inch displays, rotating front seats, and a rear bench that converts into a bed.

Power and availability
The Marco Polo offers three turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engines. The base model generates 161 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. The mid-range version provides 187 hp and 324 lb-ft, while the top-tier model delivers 234 hp and 369 lb-ft. All variants use a nine-speed automatic transmission and are available with rear- or all-wheel drive.
The quickest setup accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 8.8 seconds. Orders begin in Europe on August 5, though pricing remains unannounced. The current starting price in Germany is €80,664.
These updates reflect how automakers now view recreational vehicles. Campervans have expanded beyond niche markets, appealing to buyers who want a vehicle that serves as both daily transport and a mobile living space. The Marco Polo’s removable awning and magnetic curtains show Mercedes is addressing the need for flexibility—keeping the van practical for city driving while making it easy to transform for weekend trips.
The timing aligns with Volkswagen’s recent refresh of its California campervan. Both companies appear focused on incremental improvements rather than full redesigns. While electric RVs are gaining attention, the Marco Polo remains diesel-powered for now, prioritizing refinements like extra headroom and easier setup over major changes.
