BYD’s new Dolphin G plug-in hybrid hatchback claims a 65-mile all-electric range, with total range hitting 646 miles. Set for UK sales in autumn, the model starts below £20,000, positioning it against rivals like the Renault Clio, Volkswagen Polo, and Toyota Yaris. Unlike many competitors in the B-segment, the Dolphin G uses a full plug-in hybrid system, not mild or full hybrids. The car relies on BYD’s Super Hybrid tech, seen in the Atto 2 DM-i, combining a 1.5-liter petrol engine with two electric motors. The setup produces 128bhp from the engine and 161bhp from the drive motor, allowing 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds. Power goes exclusively to the front wheels. The system’s architecture emphasizes efficiency, with the petrol engine acting as a supplementary generator during extended driving, ensuring the vehicle maintains performance while minimizing reliance on fossil fuels. This design avoids the compromises often found in traditional hybrid systems, where fuel economy and power frequently conflict.

Two battery options are available. The base Active trim uses a 7.2kWh unit for 25 miles of electric-only driving. Higher trims—Boost, Comfort, and Sport—feature an 18.3kWh battery, stretching the range to 65 miles. The larger battery supports faster charging: 6.6kW AC and 39kW DC. The smaller battery charges at 3.3kW AC. The system also includes a ‘vehicle-to-load’ outlet, enabling the car to power external devices. This feature, which aligns with the growing trend of bidirectional energy transfer in hybrid vehicles, could prove particularly useful for users needing temporary power sources during emergencies or outdoor activities. The Dolphin G measures 4160mm long, 1825mm wide, and 1575mm tall. Its 2610mm wheelbase makes it shorter than the Atto 2 by 170mm, but still compact for a PHEV. The reduced length enhances maneuverability in urban environments, a key consideration for city-based drivers. The vehicle’s dimensions also contribute to a well-balanced weight distribution, improving stability during cornering and braking.

The Dolphin G’s Super Hybrid system is engineered to prioritize electric propulsion under normal driving conditions, reserving the petrol engine for situations where extended range or additional power is required. This approach maximizes the benefits of electrification, such as lower emissions and reduced operating costs, while ensuring the vehicle remains functional in scenarios where charging infrastructure is limited. The system’s seamless integration of components, including the engine, motors, and battery, is a hallmark of BYD’s expertise in hybrid technology.
