Solid-state battery developer Factorial Energy and South Korean manufacturer SK On are moving forward with a partnership to commercialize next-generation battery cells. The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to examine how existing production structures can be adapted for this advanced technology. The primary goal is to accelerate the market launch of Factorial’s FEST technology, which is currently undergoing testing in real-world scenarios.

This newly formed strategic partnership will focus on the technical feasibility of integrating solid-state cells into SK On’s current lithium-ion production lines. By leveraging the South Korean group’s global manufacturing capabilities, the companies aim to scale Factorial’s technology industrially. The collaboration reflects a shared interest in utilizing established infrastructure rather than building new facilities from the ground up.

Siyu Huang, founder and CEO of Factorial, emphasized the importance of manufacturing capability in the battery sector. “A battery breakthrough only matters if it can be manufactured at scale,” Huang stated. Her comments highlight the industry’s challenge of moving from laboratory success to mass production.

SK On brings significant capacity to the agreement, with an annual production volume exceeding 200 gigawatt-hours worldwide. The company operates substantial manufacturing facilities in both South Korea and the United States. Its client list includes major automotive groups such as Hyundai Motor Group, Ford, Volkswagen, and Ferrari. This existing network provides a potential shortcut for Factorial to bring its products to a global market.

The practical implications of this strategy are significant for the automotive supply chain. By retrofitting mature lithium-ion factories, manufacturers can adopt solid-state technology without the prohibitive costs and delays associated with constructing new greenfield sites. This method allows the industry to upgrade energy density and safety while maintaining the output rates required for modern electric vehicle production.

Factorial intends to adopt a capital-efficient approach to industrialization through this alliance. The agreement outlines a plan to minimize the time and financial investment typically required for factory construction. SK On’s expertise in battery technology and mass production is viewed as a critical component for integrating solid-state technology into global production ecosystems.

Factorial has already established relationships with several heavyweights in the automotive industry. The company’s strategic investors and partners include Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis. Real-world road tests have been conducted with Mercedes-Benz, while Stellantis has successfully integrated high-energy cells into a demonstration vehicle from its Dodge brand.

Developments in the company’s backing have also expanded beyond the automotive sector. Factorial is now receiving support from In-Q-Tel (IQT), a government-backed investor funded by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. The organization acts on behalf of various U.S. agencies to make dual-use technologies available for government use.

Beyond electric vehicles, the technology is being eyed for other applications. Potential uses include powering the energy demands of AI data centers and deployment in drones. Factorial’s cells have specific advantages in demanding environments, as noted by Brian Smith, a manager at IQT, who pointed to the benefits of fuel cell trucks in various settings.
